Shanghai 2-3 January 2014

We decided to go on a little trip to the old water town called Zhujiajiao.

So we had to wake up very early and catch the subway on line 2 then transfer to line 8 and then catch a bus to Zhujiajiao.  It was a lovely ride there, about an hour.  When we got there we navigated ourselves, walking, to the water town.

There were people pointing to us to go in the other direction but we hadn't even asked them for directions, so we thought, weird.  But at the end of the day we left another way and thought if we had gone the way they had told us to we would have saved about one and a half hours walk.  But it was refreshing and it was nice to see the old city.

When we got there we bought our tickets and started to walk the old city.

We had several tickets to enter different buildings in the city.
We visited the Khezhi Gardens,

Art Museum,

The City God Temple,

and the original Great Qing Post Office from the Qing era.

We also had a gondola ride on the river.

We ate lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Just some of the dishes served

We walked along the narrow passages of the water town looking what the shops had to offer.  From Beautiful shops to Oh My Word.  It also looked as if everyone had a shop downstairs and lived upstairs.

The bus back to Shanghai city was to leave at 5pm and we had to find our way back in time.  So 3pm was our deadline.  When we got to the bus station there was a bus saying they were going to the people's square which is close to where we were staying.  So we hopped on this bus. The driver didn't worry about bumps on the road and I am sure the bus did not have shocks on the back tyres.   Only for it to stop SOMEWHERE nowhere near close to the people's square.  Well we had to walk and walk and walk and walk to get near to where we were staying.  Eventually we caught the subway.

The guys went out to buy KFC for supper.  (China really does have the best KFC that I have tasted.)  This was our last full day in Shanghai and it was well spent with family.

We then just chillaxed and touch sides again with a bit of sadness as well knowing we were all going our separate ways in the morning.

And so it was.  The next day was here before we even knew it. And by 11am the taxis, yes we had to take two taxis for our luggage,  was there to fetch the Canham family.  It was such a quick goodbye and we were off.

At the train station we had to wait about an hour, but the porters quickly took us onto the train and we were settled and ready to get back to Rizhao.  (And of course the western toilets were locked again.)

After all that travelling, although we enjoyed ourselves with our family, it was good to be home.

THANK YOU STEPHEN, ANTON, SANCHIA AND PRECIOUS ERIN FOR A FANTASTIC HOLIDAY.  YOU ARE ALL AWESOME.  WE MUST DO IT AGAIN SOMETIME. !!!
