We caught the Hop on Hop off bus again. Now that we knew where everything was (marked on our maps) we decided to jump off at these places.
The first place we Hopped off at was the old market. The architecture was of the old China. It is a replica of the way the old Hutongs were. Beautiful. There were a lot of vendors selling their wares. But because it is a tourist attraction, the prices are not as cheap as the back street shops.
We meandered through the market, which isn't small I must say. We got to the center of the market and there were tea houses over a pond with zigzagged walkways. It was beautiful.
We then came to the Yu Gardens. What an amazing place. It is so tranquil and peaceful in there. A place everyone should visit whilst in Shanghai.
Then we decided to visit Tesco's which we saw the day before. Man, what a disappointment. The sign is up there, it is on the information boards inside the mall, but when you go up to the floor, there is no TESCO's. This is definitely false advertising.
We then tried to find our way to the next stop but it was way to far, so decided to take a shortcut through some alleys to get back to our starting point. It is amazing to see how the local people live when you are off the beaten track.
We caught the bus back and rested not wanting to exert ourselves for the next day as we were going to be out late for New Years Eve. So we went out again that evening just to buy some street food. And chilaxed the rest of the evening touching sides with each other.
NEW YEARS EVE
We slept late this morning. Have to get enough rest for the wonderful evening ahead. So we only went for a short walk around the back streets of the hostel. Did some buying. At about 9pm we were ready for our walk to the Bund for the Grand laser and fireworks show.
WOW! I can't tell you how many people were there. It was hectic. The police had also closed off the Bund at the bottom of the stairs. Hundreds of people waiting to get on the already packed choc o block Bund.
But all of a sudden a few young men pushed their way past the police and then the stampede. The rest of the public decided to do it as well. At first the police were going to stop them and thought better of it and let it be. So we decided to be part of the crowd. We had to hold on to each other and hold each other up. I don't know how to explain to you how you are so squashed and pushed along. If you had fallen you would never have gotten up again.
Once on the Bund we managed to manoeuvre our way close to the railing. And yes, we stood for 3 hours for the show. Erin fell asleep on Antons shoulders.
After the crowds had dispersed then we went and bought some street food and headed back to the hostel.

We managed to take some beautiful photos of the city lit up.
